Traversing the Big Apple: How to Get Around in New York City

By Abraham Sanieoff

Nowadays, the globalized economy has made cities run 24 hours a day. Many places worldwide are already operating on this round-the-clock model, but only a few cities can hold a candle to the popularity and charm of New York City.

The City That Never Sleeps is one of the most loved and visited cities in the world, and it promises something for everyone. Every corner of this city’s five boroughs offers sights, sounds, tastes, and experiences that make it a worthwhile destination. However, its sheer size can make it tough to get around from one place to another.

Fortunately, the Big Apple offers multiple ways tourists can get around it. The following modes of transportation should make many of the bustling metropolis’ beloved landmarks accessible within a day or two.

Taxis

Almost every film set in New York has a yellow cab in it. Yellow taxis, iconic symbols of New York life, can be found almost anywhere in the city and should be able to get you to your destination quickly.

The fastest way to know if a cab can be hailed is by checking the sign at its top. If the taxi sign is lit up, you can flag it down. Taxi trips are metered, and the cost of travel will vary depending on the distance between your pickup point and destination. If you don’t feel like hailing a cab, Uber, Lyft, and Via are great alternatives.

Subway Trains

New York’s subway system is as iconic as it is convenient to use. It serves 1.7 billion riders every year, and its 25 routes cover an incredible 665 miles underneath the city. The five boroughs are easily accessible through this system, though Staten Island’s subway system isn’t directly connected to its neighbors.

One of the biggest reasons that make the NYC subway a viable mode of transportation is its 24-hour operation. If you’re just leaving Broadway past midnight because of a gala show, you can always ride the subway to get to your hotel or Airbnb.

Commuter Trains, Buses, and Cruises

Another option you can use is commuter trains and buses. A train can get you to destinations that aren’t covered by the subway system. Fares vary depending on the length of your trip, but overall, it’s an efficient and cost-effective way to get to nearby locales like Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey, and Long Island.

Buses and cruises offer alternative mobility options. Bus trips require you to pay with a MetroCard or exact change once you get on from a bus stop, while the city’s ferry service is the best way to get waterside views of the city and the Statue of Liberty.

Walking and Cycling

New York may be a huge city, but you can actually get around by walking and cycling. NYC has become friendlier toward two-wheeled vehicles in recent years, and the city has seen an increasing number of cyclists.

If you’re not in a rush to get to your destination, then it may be in your best interests to walk around. The city is densely crowded, so you need to be careful, but taking it slow may lead you to discover hidden gems and less-traveled spots.

Get Around and Enjoy New York

The Big Apple promises a treasure trove of experiences and opportunities to its visitors. As long as you know how to get around, you can make the most of what this beautiful city has to offer.
